This information below comes for personal experience and will give you a look at what it is really like to work as an accountant, there is a few different types of accountants but as I have experience with tax accountants, this will be the area I’m talking about.
1. Are you okay with sitting at a desk for hours and staring vacantly at a computer monitor?
If the answer to this question is ‘no’ then I suggest you stop now, this is a large part of being an accountant and is inevitable. You will be constantly staring at figures and will need to make sure figures balance; this involves looking at hundreds of numbers and typing them up.
2. Are you good with people?
As an accountant you will eventually have to speak face to face with your clients so that you can discuss and analyze what you have recorded and reported. They will have questions for you and won’t always be all smiles, as long as you understand that you will be okay.
3. Are you organized? Can you meet deadlines when necessary?
You will need to have your clients files organized and ready, if a client comes in to your firm and wants a copy of a document or to sign something, you will need to be able to retrieve this document without having to dig through years of paperwork and waste your clients
(and your own) valuable time.
During tax time accountants will have to meet deadlines a lot more than other times during the year.
4. What type of education do I need to become an accountant?
Generally accounting jobs will require a four year bachelor's degree in accounting. Some employers such as Ernst & Young might also call for you to become a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). Some large companies require master's degree in accounting, or even an MBA with a specialization in accounting. Though, there are more fundamental accounting and bookkeeping jobs that you could get with a two-year degree or just a small amount of qualified training.
